What does community service mean to you?
To me, community service means creating a more supportive environment for everyone. It requires personal sacrifice for the well-being of the greater community.
What service activities did you participate in at MSA?
I chose to attend the volunteer activities almost every available day. Two of my favorite activities were playing bingo and spending time with residents at a local nursing home and gardening and collecting vegetables at one of the local farms.
How have you continued your volunteerism after the Academy?
While I have always been an enthusiastic volunteer, MSA reminded me of the value and joy of service. Today, I’m a proud volunteer of Missouri Boys State, the local food bank, several prison education programs and initiatives, and many one-time opportunities through my involvement in education and professional organizations.
How can young people get involved with service activities within their communities?
Keep your eyes and ears open for needs of individuals within your community. Ask your adult mentors and role models to connect you with organizations that serve the community. Reading the local newspaper or attending local government meetings can also a great way to learn about community initiatives.
What is one fun fact about you that others may not know?
I am training to complete a 500+ mile solo hike across Europe in June of next year.
